The business problem
A digital agency that serves healthcare and life-sciences companies needed a website that proved its own standards: fast, accessible, easy for non-developers to keep current, and credible to buyers who work in a regulated industry. Its portfolio, services and case material change often, so editors had to publish without a developer, and the site had to be easy for search engines and AI assistants to read.
The technical challenge
- Fast by default. Rich pages with many images and a video background, still quick to load worldwide.
- Editor-friendly. A content model that lets the team add portfolio entries and update services without code.
- Crawlable. Clean server-rendered HTML, correct metadata and a clear policy for search and AI crawlers.
- Accessible. Meeting accessibility basics is part of credibility in this industry.
What I did
I worked on the site’s Next.js front end and the Sanity-driven content behind it. Pages are prerendered and served from the edge on Vercel; images go through next/image so each visitor gets a correctly sized file, with below-the-fold images lazy-loaded and the hero image prioritised; fonts are self-hosted and preloaded; every image has alt text; the page carries a canonical URL and organization structured data; and the robots file explicitly allows the main search and AI crawlers.
Architecture
- Next.js (App Router) with static prerendering, deployed on Vercel
- Sanity for services, portfolio entries, images and video
next/imagefor around 100 images on the home page- XML sitemap, canonical tags and Organization JSON-LD
Results
Lighthouse 12.8 on the live site, 3 October 2026 (whole-site results, not only my work):
- Desktop: Performance 98, Accessibility 100, Best Practices 100, SEO 100; LCP 1.1 s.
- Mobile: Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO all 100; Performance 67 (median of three runs).
What I would do next
The mobile score is held back by a background video of about 1.7 MB that downloads on phones. Serving a lightweight poster image on small screens and loading the video only on desktop or after the main content is shown would remove most of the gap.
